It's 5 P.M on a Friday, and you are the lead DBA of a major organisation. Just as you are about to ease out of the door for weekend, the phone rings and there is a panic voice on the other end of the line. It's one of the application administrators for an important application, and it seems the query that runs in less than 2s is running for an half an hour. At CERN, databases play a critical role in gathering the data from the proton beam collisions and submitting jobs on the Worldwide LHC Computing grid for scientists and physicists to analyze the gathered data. In this session I will cover the techniques available in Oracle 11g and Oracle 12c to control SQL execution plans and application of these techniques in mission critical scenarios.

The attendees will hear the reasons for execution plan changes and the available mechanisms to control execution plans to achieve greater application stability. These techniques include outline, sql profile, sql plan baselines and sql patches. I will also touch upon the newer techniques available in 12c which are adaptive plans and adaptive statistics. By the end of the session the DBA's and Developer will be able to apply some of these techniques in critical production scenarios.
